What’s it all about?

In 2023, the community first came together to fund 36 beautiful town centre light motifs for our lampposts. Thanks to this epic achievement, Croydon Council will now test our motifs, put them up and take them down, and then store them each year for free. This fundraiser adds a beautiful town centre Christmas tree, festive lights switch-on events and celebrations, and pays for the power costs for all motifs and tree lights for this year and hopefully next year’s too! We hope it will also fund the full restoration and painting of the historic Victorian iron railings on Church Road which is where we showcase the Christmas tree.

Who’s doing this?

Light Up The Palace was formed in 2023, a community interest company (CIC) set up to manage festive events and Christmas lighting for Crystal Palace town centre. Run by local volunteers, we wish to bring festive cheer and community celebrations to the Triangle every year.

Why restore the ornate railings? Well, they are historic, Victorian, and much-loved as our “Wee Triangle” or “Wee T”! The site of the old public toilets, it is the only viable public space in the town centre to power our wonderful Christmas tree, so it’s where we hold the fabulous festive switch-on events.

Just a large 3-sided traffic island in the eyes of the Council, but we love this pretty triangle within a Triangle. And it has our very own heritage lamppost kindly installed by Croydon to support multiple community gatherings.

The stretch target also helps us build a small contingency fund for lights breakages and repairs. Because we own all our motifs, we can plan for enhancing them in future years too.
